HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. Our team is innovative and hardworking, we all come from different backgrounds, where we are able to combine our transferable skills to make RPAIR successful. This means that we all see things slightly differently but we come together with our skills and expertise to drive this company forward. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our company, RPAIR, has developed an online comparison marketplace for watch and jewellery owners in the UK to get easier access to repairs for their watches and jewelry items by matching them with qualified and reviewed repair shops across the UK. What is the origin story? Like many ideas, RPAIR was born from real-world frustrations. While working in the watch and jewelry industry for over 15 years, I experienced many problems keeping customers updated on their watch and jewelry repairs whilst working at my family’s jewelry shop. In 2019 I thought "Could technology be used to simplify communication between the repair shop and customer, and repair this broken process?" When discussing this idea with my partner Michael one evening, the real lightbulb moment happened. Together, we quickly realised a solution that would solve many more of the problems experienced in this industry. One platform that could help customers easily find and compare watch and jewelry repair quotes whilst simultaneously helping jewelry and repair shops win and manage more jobs. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? We love working together, we have fun and make this more than a job and a business. We are a passionate group of people that are constantly challenging each other to get the best out of each other and to keep pushing our business forward. We are a group of forward thinkers on a mission to make watch and jewelry repairs fair and easy for all. We have a balanced blend of backgrounds and we believe this helps guide our market understanding and inform our product decisions. These backgrounds include the watch and jewelry industry, design, tech product development, software engineering, and sales. Together, we want to solve old school problems with new-age tools. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? We would be figuring out something else to start working on. To be honest I can’t think of much else to do. The four of us have met, individually and with each other at times to work together and build something, so if it wasn’t this it would be something else. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? At the moment we believe success is measured in different ways. Every week is a different level of success. We have set milestones to hit, and as we are growing we are hitting them and measuring our success by them. Our goal currently is to make the repairs process easier for customers, so they bother to get their repairs completed, but our goal is also to on-board more businesses so we can drive customers to them and increase their repairs business. As long as we are working towards both of these goals and making this process easier for customers and businesses then we are successful. We’ve seen a huge volume of repair jobs come through ranging from Rolex watch servicing to diamond ring resizing. It’s amazing to see people trusting the platform with their most precious items. We also had one repair partner make back their subscription fee in their first week by being really engaged with the platform and going above and beyond for the customer. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? We are excited about AI technology, specifically, with everything that has happened in the world recently. The combination of AI and vaccine development being able to significantly speed up this process could mean we do not have to suffer another pandemic in this way at all. Excited: We are not worried about any particular type of technology, but the addiction that we have to social media and technology. Technology is amazing, but how we choose to use it and how our behavior changes in a negative way are what is worrying. With the rise of technology and social media addiction, we sometimes worry about how to educate our children on how to use it responsibly. Worried: What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? Interesting and varied articles across lots of interesting tech topics. 8-Bit branding is cool and the whole platform doesn’t take itself too seriously. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? We have learned so much, and so much of this is new to all of us. The key is to have the right people around you, make sure you are agile when an opportunity presents itself, or when a mistake is made. Just because you built a roadmap does not mean you cannot pivot and change direction. For example, within 2 weeks of our BETA launch, we saw significant issues with the customer journey and had to rearrange our priorities and work hard to get it sorted. Also we learned to not live in fear of putting out a product that isn’t perfect. What you can learn from being live and getting real-life feedback is invaluable. You, if it pleases you, Woodrow, can have the peace without the victory"—and Susan stalked off to bed with the comfortable consciousness of having got the better of the argument with the President. But a few days later she rushed to Mrs. Blythe in red-hot excitement. "Mrs. Dr. dear, what do you think? A 'phone message has just come through from Charlottetown that Woodrow Wilson has sent that German ambassador man to the right about at last. They tell me that means war. So I begin to think that Woodrow's heart is in the right place after all, wherever his head may be, and I am going to commandeer a little sugar and celebrate the occasion with some fudge, despite the howls of the Food Board. I thought that submarine business would bring things to a crisis. I told Cousin Sophia so when she said it was the beginning of the end for the Allies." "Don't let the doctor hear of the fudge, Susan," said Anne, with a smile. "You know he has laid down very strict rules for us along the lines of economy the government has asked for." "Yes, Mrs. Dr. dear, and a man should be master in his own household, and his women folk should bow to his decrees. I flatter myself that I am becoming quite efficient in economizing"—Susan had taken to using certain German terms with killing effect—"but one can exercise a little gumption on the quiet now and then. Shirley was wishing for some of my fudge the other day—the Susan brand, as he called it—and I said 'The first victory there is to celebrate I shall make you some.' S. is in the war, and we have got Kut and Bagdad back—and I would not be surprised to see the Allies in Berlin by June—and the Russians, too, since they have got rid of the Czar. That, in my opinion was a good piece of work." "Time will show if it is," said Cousin Sophia, who would have been very indignant if anyone had told her that she would rather see Susan put to shame as a seer, than a successful overthrow of tyranny, or even the march of the Allies down Unter den Linden. But then the woes of the Russian people were quite unknown to Cousin Sophia, while this aggravating, optimistic Susan was an ever-present thorn in her side. Just at that moment Shirley was sitting on the edge of the table in the living-room, swinging his legs—a brown, ruddy, wholesome lad, from top to toe, every inch of him—and saying coolly, "Mother and dad, I was eighteen last Monday. The doctor's hands were not quite steady as he folded up the powders he was concocting for Abbie Flagg's rheumatism. He had known this moment was coming, yet he was not altogether prepared for it. He answered slowly, "I won't try to hold you back from what you believe to be your duty. But you must not go unless your mother says you may." Shirley said nothing more. He was not a lad of many words. Anne did not say anything more just then, either. She was thinking of little Joyce's grave in the old burying-ground over-harbour—little Joyce who would have been a woman now, had she lived—of the white cross in France and the splendid grey eyes of the little boy who had been taught his first lessons of duty and loyalty at her knee—of Jem in the terrible trenches—of Nan and Di and Rilla, waiting—waiting—waiting, while the golden years of youth passed by—and she wondered if she could bear any more. She thought not; surely she had given enough. Yet that night she told Shirley that he might go. They did not tell Susan right away. She did not know it until, a few days later, Shirley presented himself in her kitchen in his aviation uniform. Susan didn't make half the fuss she had made when Jem and Walter had gone. She said stonily, "So they're going to take you, too." "Take me? No. I'm going, Susan—got to." Susan sat down by the table, folded her knotted old hands, that had grown warped and twisted working for the Ingleside children to still their shaking, and said: "Yes, you must go. I did not see once why such things must be, but I can see now." "You're a brick, Susan," said Shirley. He was relieved that she took it so coolly—he had been a little afraid, with a boy's horror of "a scene." He went out whistling gaily; but half an hour later, when pale Anne Blythe came in, Susan was still sitting there. "Mrs. Dr. dear," said Susan, making an admission she would once have died rather than make, "I feel very old. Jem and Walter were yours but Shirley is mine. And I cannot bear to think of him flying—his machine crashing down—the life crushed out of his body—the dear little body I nursed and cuddled when he was a wee baby." "Susan—don't," cried Anne. The story of LSD in America is one of deception, manipulation, and control. Initially developed as a chemical weapon by the CIA, LSD was tested secretly on unsuspecting American citizens for decades in the 1950s and 1960s. to harden them against such an attack. Some experiments were, however, with willing participants at universities. From inmates to addicts paid in drugs, the CIA experiments with LSD even dosed agents themselves What started as "scientific research" at universities soon spiraled out of control. Timothy Leary, a Harvard psychologist, began advocating its recreational use and formed an cult among students. Under the guise of academic freedom, LSD then spread from the labs onto college campuses. Once he was fired, Leary helped launch the psychedelic counter-culture by popularizing LSD use among the emerging hippie movement. LSD Meanwhile, the media downplayed the dangers of LSD. Time Magazine, owned by the pro-CIA Luce family, published glowing reports depicting LSD as a spiritual and consciousness-expanding drug. "Acid tests" hosted by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters glorified psychedelic experiences. However, as Abbie Hoffman noted, the drug-focused hippies actually distracted from meaningful anti-war Before the hippie movement, anti-war protesters were "clean-cut, normal-looking, all-American college students." But after the CIA introduced LSD-fueled orgies, hippies, and opposition to the war were associated with dirty, ignorant, communist, drug-addicted VD-infested degenerates. activism. Due to the clandestine nature of the agency, it's hard to prove whether this was an intended effect, or if they simply had agents that dropped the ball and let a mind-control drug into the crowd of dissenters. Based on the consequences to those dissenters that started communes and how the status quo lives on, it is not irrational to suspect this was intentional, even if it was perpetrated by a select few agents abusing their power. The agency isn't really known for making mistakes. Journalist Steven Kinzler is quoted as saying "Gottlieb wanted to create a way to seize control of people's minds, and he realized it was a two-part process," We didn't get too far on number two, but he did a lot of work on number one." "First, you had to blast away the existing mind. Second, you had to find a way to insert a new mind into that resulting void. Or did they? Brainwashing is not a new idea. It was once called putting someone under a spell. Introduce new ideas and entrancing music, after destroying the ego with drugs. It's not new. The official conclusion was If so, why has it been known to be used for thousands of years? So was this drug used en masse to brainwash dissenters protesting against the Vietnam War? that it is not possible. At the height of the hippie counterculture in 1968, Middle America elected Richard Nixon - the ultimate "anti-hippie" who then promptly escalated the war. We know the CIA, through figures like Miles Copeland Jr., had a hand in proliferating LSD during this time. The real goal appears now to have been dispersing and discrediting the anti-war movement - not spiritual awakening. It was only scandal that got Nixon and the war nixed. The notion that LSD functions solely as a source of amusement and amazement trivializes the tremendous psychological disruption the drug is capable of inducing. When administered carefully and deliberately, even at modest doses, LSD has the potential for disrupting individuals, and coordinated group efforts in multiple ways. Some subjects in the CIA experiments even died tragic deaths and others were sent to mental institutions. The true toll is not even known. Financial records indicate the CIA operative George White, under an alias of Morgan Hall, received over 200 checks signed with the code "STORMY" in the memo field, their CIA codename for LSD. Hall lured targets to a bugged apartment under false pretenses before dosing them with LSD and observing their drugged states through a one-way mirror from what he called his "portable toilet observation post" while getting drunk on martinis. For him, it was fun. The larger MK -ULTRA program operated on a far grander scale across 86 known institutions with unwitting participation from researchers, doctors, and university staff to agents themselves. Seemingly through happenstance, one MK ULTRA subject would go on to catalyze the 1960s counterculture revolution: Ken Kesey. The money from his CIA experiment at Stanford University funded the acid tests that helped launch the psychedelic era. Where an onlooker may have seen frivolity, LSD's power to fundamentally disrupt established cultural norms (and more) was on full display. Kesey inspired the visionaries who would redefine art, music, and politics for the Boomer generation. The events surrounding MK-ULTRA remind us that moments perceived as transitions to more free and creative cultural eras were and are under attack by clandestine and coercive circumstances, with authorities wielding powerful tools of psychological influence on unwitting citizens. “I didn’t believe it for a long time,” Kesey told NPR’s Terry Gross in 1989, “It was being done to try to make people insane – to weaken people and to try to put them under the control of interrogators.” “I found that my key opened a lot of the doors to these doctor’s offices,” He told Gross, “where these drugs were being kept.” Before being introduced to LSD, he was a fairly straight-laced athlete. Then Kesey became part of an experiment he was told had the aim of helping mentally insane people. He didn’t understand that it was intended to make him insane. Let us pause to reflect on the deeper implications of these anecdotes. It seems almost comical to think this was an accident. Is it possible LSD and even other drugs were introduced to society for malicious purposes? MDMA for example is often used at "raves", where entrancing music is performed. Could it be that this is not only tolerated but promoted and meant to keep people in line or for some other reason? After all, it too, was part of MK-ULTRA experiments. Though we only know of animal studies they conducted on it, many records were destroyed in 1973, so we may never know. Kesey was unwittingly recruited into an insidious program of social engineering and psychological manipulation. Though he intuitively distrusted authority, he could not have envisioned the far-reaching impact his actions would have. When one person is given the tools to disrupt others' mental faculties, it raises profound ethical questions. Kesey embraced psychedelics as a path to enlightenment, but the actual goal of those enabling him appears to breed dependence, weakness, and compliance to those holding the keys. By popularizing LSD, Kesey catalyzed a cultural shift that undermined traditional values and authority. But his revolt was seemingly orchestrated by unseen hands pulling strings from above, even if indirectly. If the hippie ethos of "free love" and drug use didn't arise organically from the collective; it was engineered and then distributed as a social virus that devastated the movement with overdoses, disruption to family and community structures, and much more. The perfect clandestine weapon against the "commie hippies". Kesey thought he was a rebel, but he may have unwittingly become a pawn in a larger game. His defiance was co-opted to sow the seeds of societal destabilization, focused on the communes that threatened the police state with self-governance much like our nation's founders had intended it to be. The illusion of freedom masks the fact that those who control the drug supply ultimately determine the parameters of people's experiences. Selecting people with the right mild psychosis, and the right dose could drive them insane. Given to another individual with grandiose ideas, they may start preaching. Give the same drug to a group he preaches to, and they might develop a type of mass psychosis that adopts these perverted, though well-meaning ideals. If you or someone you know has been trained to think fun is a synonym for drugs or sex, remember that these are not their original ideas. They were planted in these people by/at some unethical party, and their biggest crime is lying to themselves and allowing these ideas to possess their minds. The murderers of presidents felt threatened, so it appears they attacked in a covert way. Those peaceful protesters became targeted. The women of the movement were trained to seek out “free love” in the form of drugs and sex, burning up resources, time, and the real love of the families and men around them, and any love that was in their own hearts. Their families broken, children suffering, and the men drained of their resources and love until they become savage abusers that wind up in prison after hurting or killing someone… This may all be an indirect result of CIA conditioning from the top down. While the counterculture may have unleashed creative sparks, it was distorted and twisted with lies telling women they could have free love through hollow sexual pursuits. The ability to alter people's consciousness comes with profound ethical responsibilities that were not heeded. Kesey played his part unknowingly, but history will mark him as a vessel through which forces beyond his understanding shaped the world for decades to come.
