Getting Started with Amazon Interactive Video Service (4-Part Series) It’s becoming impossible to ignore live streaming. There are tons of studies that illustrate its popularity and continued growth, but forget the numbers for just a second and consider how many of us consume news media, and entertainment, and even how some of us workout. We’re becoming more dependent on the internet to deliver us what we want and need, and we want it fast, reliably, and on demand. I won’t spend a bunch of time trying to convince you that live streaming solves all of your problems. If you’re reading this, then you probably already have a good idea that live streaming is a great fit for your application. If not, you should still keep reading - trust me, even the smallest use cases can benefit from what we’re going to explore. But - and I can tell you this from experience - it’s to build a quality live-streaming experience from the ground up. It sounds easy enough. If you wanted to, you could spin up a compute instance, update the OS, install some open-source media server software, open the firewall and virtual network ports and get a stream up and running in a day. But what happens when someone connects to your stream from the other side of the world? What about when your stream gets really popular and a few thousand people want to view it? Are you prepared to manage auto scalers, load balancers, and OS updates/patching/maintenance? Yeah, me neither. really hard Really smart people have already solved this problem. Right now, there are about 2.5 million people watching a live stream on . By the end of the day, 31 million people will have tuned in at some point. In 2021, over have been streamed on Twitch. That’s a of live-streaming traffic. Twitch didn’t build . Enter Amazon Interactive Video Service (or Amazon IVS). Amazon IVS is that powers Twitch. And you can use it to power your own interactive live video streaming applications. So, how does it work? There are several different options for broadcasting and playback, but at its core, Amazon IVS allows you to: Twitch 1.3 trillion (with a T) minutes lot its product overnight the service Create a channel Create a playback interface Broadcast (stream) There are different ways to create channels (console, CLI, SDK) and create playback interfaces (web, native). There are also different ways to broadcast (or “stream”) to your channels (desktop software, mobile apps, web broadcast). I’ll show you how all of these work in future posts, but today let’s get the basics out of the way by just creating a channel and streaming to it. If you’ve never live streamed before, the quickest way to get started from your laptop/desktop is to install something like or . Another quick and easy way to stream is to do it directly from the command line with , but this method will not include some of the nicer features of other options (like easily streaming a desktop window or application and adding fun transitions to your scenes). Home workout trends have evolved alongside technology, from videos on tape to streamed sessions incorporating biometrics monitoring. Developed with a data-centric approach to fitness, users refer to as the world’s smartest home gym and personal trainer for good reason. The company is reimagining the modern at-home workout experience by offering strength training via a compact, wall-mounted device that adapts to meet each user’s fitness ability. Tonal Launched in 2018, the Tonal strength-training system uses electromagnetic resistance to simulate various weights and dynamically adjusts throughout the workout based on the user’s performance and historical data. Video displays directly on the Android-based device, which also provides access to personal training sessions and recommended workouts. While content was initially only available on-demand because of the complexities of its unique workouts, Tonal is introducing live class options this fall. Rising interest from coaches and users spurred development of the new offering, which is made possible by managed live streaming service (Amazon IVS). Amazon Interactive Video Service Tonal Director of Content Engineering Scott White was up and running with Amazon IVS on day one, and within three days he had integrated with Tonal software. He shared, “When evaluating livestreaming service providers, Amazon IVS stood out for how it includes metadata in the stream. This feature is critically important for us to deliver Tonal’s signature workouts live, and we were able to figure out how to use it quickly. Our team already uses AWS services, like Amazon S3 for storage, so the process was very familiar; we just entered a couple keys, hit the API, and we were up and running.” Unlike mapping storyboards for cardio-focused workouts, delivering live strength training workouts requires a more nuanced approach, since timing often varies. As users progress through sets, they may tire or need a water break; the Tonal design accounts for these points of unpredictability. To ensure participants stay engaged and motivated, relevant data appears on screen, such as feedback on their form, when they met a goal, when they set new personal records (PRs), and encouragement from fellow class members as emoji-like kudos. Using Amazon IVS and harnessing its metadata capabilities, Tonal preserves and translates all the elements of its personalized workouts into the live format. Once complete, Tonal adds the recording of the live workout to the on-demand archive. Before rolling out the new feature widely, Tonal previewed live workouts with a select group of users and received enthusiastic feedback around the interactive element. Noted White, “Our beta testers loved getting to see the proper form and pace of each exercise with the instructor in real time, and felt motivated to push harder in their workouts.” In fine-tuning the integration, the Tonal team collaborated with the Amazon IVS service team to help navigate Tonal’s unique livestream implementation. As an example, Tonal’s wall mounted device required a 9×16 portrait mode display versus the standard 16×9 landscape format. “The Tonal device screen is orientated to portrait mode, so the stream needed to be delivered in that format at the right resolution to provide a good customer experience,” White explained. “We had excellent support from the Amazon IVS team, and that helped make for a very smooth integration process.” Like the on-demand classes, Tonal streams live workouts from a well-equipped production studio. Coaches focus on demonstrating movements and leading workouts from their own Tonal stations, and producers, who monitor incoming data from user systems, feed them data-informed cues from user systems, such as milestones or PR achievements. Producers also track workout progress and inject timed metadata into the stream when the coach transitions to a new movement, keeping the Tonal systems and livestream in sync, and advising the system of where users are in the workout routine. “With Amazon IVS, we’ve translated the Tonal experience–delivering personalized strength training though intelligent technology–into a live group setting, quickly, reliably and ready to scale,” White concluded.

Fully customizable, the LikeLike platform offers a suite of prebuilt tools, such as chat features, polls, or a rewards engine, via embed code, SDK, and REST API to accommodate a range of development needs. The company also provides creative ideas and technical services as needed. Initially used in sports and media for brands like NASCAR and FOX, the technology is now employed for a range of verticals, including e-commerce, fintech, and education. “Our strength is audience engagement, and Amazon IVS builds on that by managing the video component, and also gives us the ability to scale so that we can ultimately create a better solution for customers,” said Chelsey Rushworth, Senior VP of Sales at LiveLike. “LiveLike is built on AWS, so there’s nice synergy there, and collaborating with the Amazon IVS team has been beneficial all around. The metadata must be included in the stream at the time of video encoding. Then the metadata “cue” is fired at predetermined intervals while the stream plays. This “cue” can be listened to with an event listener. The “cue” event can contain a “text” property, which is a string and can be stringified JSON. This can be utilized to add any arbitrary data to be encoded in the video stream. This stringified JSON can then be parsed when the “cue” is fired, allowing us to make changes in our application, such as showing some UI. The sample uses mock metadata to show the functionality but includes an example stream with working metadata cues. You can include your own stream containing metadata to further test and make changes to this sample. Steps: First, the steps for getting started with the LiveLike SDK above must be followed.
