Surely, BitTorrent sounds like something familiar, right? It’s that famous file-sharing protocol that now works with the client uTorrent. Well, Bram Cohen, an American computer scientist, is the one who invented it —and more. He’s also considered an early cypherpunk, even if he wasn’t on the 90’s mailing list because he’s been dedicated to creating privacy-oriented and peer-to-peer (P2P) software. History The BitTorrent protocol was created by programmer Bram Cohen in April 2001. The first version of the protocol was released on 2nd July 2001. The optimal division of labor between local devices and servers (super-peers) needs further research: you want it to work offline or in a mesh network (to some extent), but also to be able to utilize the power of data centers. Introduced in February 2015, TechCrunch Magazine noted IPFS was  “quickly spreading by word of mouth.” It’s possibly a key component to solving deep-seated but largely unknown problems that exist in today's internet usage. Some believe IPFS, a new tongue-twisting acronym, is a tool that’ll finally evolve the internet from central entities to a world wide web of shared information, as our online founders always envisioned. The Simple Breakdown: IPFS = Git + BitTorrent To understand IPFS or an Interplanetary File System, one can envision a file system that stores files and tracks versions over time, like the project ….. Git Photo . Source Git is a distributed version control system, or VCS. Developers use it to track changes to their code . When text is added, edited or deleted in any piece of code, Git tracks the changes line-by-line It’s distributed because every user has all the source code on their computer  and can act as a server. Secondly, Git is backed by a content-addressable database, meaning the content in the database is immutable. But... IPFS also incorporates how files move across a network, making it a distributed file system, such as . BitTorrent Photo . Source BitTorrent allows users to quickly download  large files using minimum internet bandwidth. For this reason it is free  to use and includes no spyware or pop-up advertising. BitTorrent’s protocol maximizes transfer speed by gathering small pieces of files desired by the user and downloads the content pieces simultaneously from other users that retain seekers content. BitTorrent is popular for freely sharing videos, programs, books, music, legal/medical records, and more. Not to mention, the downloads are much faster than other protocols. Photo . By utilizing both characteristics of these two entities, IPFS birthed a new permanent web that challenges existing internet protocols, such as HTTP. WTF Is Wrong With HTTP? It Seems Fine To Me, TYVM. Well, first, I’m not sure if you realized you had options. So while the thought: “The World Wide Web is actually wider…” sinks into your head, here’s a brief summary of what you’ve likely been using for some time. Sit back for a quick lesson on HTTP, ASAP. (lol, you love the free jokes in my articles). The internet is a collection of protocols that describe how data moves through a network. Developers adopted these protocols over time as they built applications on top of existing infrastructure. The protocol that serves as the backbone of the web is the HyperText Transfer Protocol. HTTP, or HyperText Transfer Protocol is an application layer protocol for distributed, collaborative hypermedia systems created by Tim Berners Lee at CERN in 1989. HTTP is the foundation for data communication using hypertext files. It is currently used for most of the data transfer on the internet. HTTP is a request-response protocol. Since the internet boasts a vast array of resources hosted on different servers. To access these resources, a browser needs to be able to send a request to the server and display the resources. HTTP is the underlying format for structuring  requests and responses for communication between  client and host. The message that is sent by a client to a server is what is known as an HTTP request. When these requests are being sent, clients can use various methods to make this request. HTTP request methods are the assets that indicate a specific action to be performed on a given resource. Each method implements a distinct semantic, but there are some shared features. Common Example: the Google homepage-back to the “client” or browser. This is a location-addressed protocol which means when google.com is inserted into a browser, it gets translated into an IP address belonging to a Google server, initiating a request-response cycle with that server. If there’s 10,000 people trying to access a site, on the backend, there are 10k requests, and 10k responses. This sounds great, right?  Problem is it’s  pretty inefficient. In a perfect world, participants should be able to leverage physical proximity to more effectively retrieve requested information. HTTP presents another significant issue if there is a  problem in the network’s line of communication, leaving the client unable to connect with the server. This occurs if: A country is blocking some content An ISP has an outage Content was merely moved or deleted. These types of exist everywhere on the HTTP web. broken links A location-based addressing model, like HTTP, encourages the centralization of information. It is convenient to trust a handful of applications with all our online data, but there’s a great sense of power and responsibility that comes with placing centralized providers with our precious personal and public information. K, LMK What IPFS Is. Simply, IPFS is an acronym for ‘ ,’ which is a protocol and P2P network in a distributed system that is utilized for storing and accessing websites, applications, files and data. Following the invention of the Internet by Robert Kahn in 1983, there are multiple developments that have focused on improving the Internet. The most remarkable improvement that has taken place is the decentralization of the Internet. The development has been massive enough to the extent of transforming different activities in modern society ranging from governance, law and trust to finance, health tech and fractional ownership. The current Internet architecture takes hold of several small entities in a confined structure referred to as centralization. Ever since the advent of the Internet, sharing of information through the Internet depended on the centralization of resources in a database such that all the peers in the interconnected network are centrally controlled. With decentralized systems, there is no reliance on intermediaries to facilitate connections. Instead, in decentralized systems, individual nodes in the network take control of their own data and at the same time individually share information directly with other nodes available in the network.​ Today the centralization of the Internet implies only a few companies taking control of the Internet through data privacy as well as dictating how information flows. An Introduction to Holochain: Concept, Architecture, and DHTs

(Read Part 2 here ) That one single innovation since the last century, which probably has the most significant impact on our lives today is the internet. It started as a decentralized ecosystem back in the early days. The open protocols like TCP/IP and SMTP helped build different kinds of applications on top of the internet like the World Wide Web, emailing services, and messaging. However, the internet, s we know it today is all centralized, and companies are investing heavily in huge server farms that hold all our data and information. Too much ‘centralization’ is slowly killing the online ecosystem Centralization has its own unique benefits, which include: Higher speeds Low latency Higher availability Quick throughput But all these benefits come at the cost of severe drawbacks like data hacks and security breaches, censorships, and lack of control over your data, to name a few. If you carefully observe, the internet is dominated by a few technology companies, the ‘Big Tech’. In fact, the internet is dominated by only a handful of ten big companies, according to a blog post published by . Too much centralization also means that the governments can ban your access to any application, leaving you with no other options whatsoever. Mashable Hacks, censorships, and blockage are widespread in the centralized system One recent example came from Turkey where the government banned Wikipedia in 2017, claiming it was a ‘threat to their national security’. China has blocked access to popular social media, search engine platforms, and replace them with applications that come with lots of government surveillance, content blockage, and censorship. So now the question arises, how can we make the internet decentralized again with no censorship and more public control? Well, it is certainly possible as more and more advancements have been made into the ‘decentralized cloud storage’ space, which we will discuss more in this article. What is Decentralization, and how does it apply to cloud storage? Decentralization, in terms of technology, means that the system doesn’t rely on a central authority, it doesn’t have a single point of failure. In more technical terms, decentralization is a subset of distributed architecture where the decision making is performed independently by all the participating nodes, instead of relying on a single node. Decentralization has been around for many years, and it has more to do with governance, decision making, and control. The earliest example of a decentralized system is the internet itself, where the websites were hosted on individual PCs, followed by Napster and BitTorrent, which laid the foundation for peer-to-peer (p2p) file sharing. BitTorrent protocol became the most famous and widely adopted and is still used today in a variety of different applications. When we talk about cloud storage, ‘decentralized cloud storage’ means that you can store your data, not on one single server or location, but many different nodes spread across multiple locations. These nodes are independent of each other in terms of complete authority over decision making. It is quite similar to BitTorrent protocol where the users host files on their local storage and act as ‘seeders’ (sharing chunks of files with other users who want to retrieve them), but there are some fundamental differences. Decentralized cloud storage is made possible by the new protocol for the distributed web named IPFS (InterPlanetary File System). In the next part, we will dive a little deeper into the IPFS protocol. We will also discuss how it differentiates from the BitTorrent protocol, which is also built for distributed peer-to-peer (p2p) file-sharing over the internet. IPFS and how it builds the foundation for the decentralized cloud storage IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a protocol developed by Protocol Labs for the distributed web of the future. It aims to challenge the traditional HTTP protocol by building a more distributed and decentralized network. Both HTTP and IPFS are hypermedia protocols built for the web, to transfer any data between client and server over the internet. However, there are subtle differences between the two, in fact, IPFS aims to replace HTTPS to become the default protocol of the internet. Instead of a single server, IPFS works on a huge swarm of nodes that store different blocks of data and users accessing the network can retrieve this data from the nearest node. Below is the brief explanation of what happens to the files on the IPFS network: The file is divided into chunks of data called blocks. Each block is given a unique hash. IPFS works on deduplication, which means that all the redundant files are removed from the network. Every node participating in the IPFS network stores the content with its hash and some indexing information. When a user wants to retrieve the file, he is telling the network to find a list of nodes that have the content behind a particular hash. With IPNS, a decentralized naming system, each file can be easily found by human-readable names. One other significant difference between IPFS and HTTP is how they address the content over the internet. HTTP primarily uses something called ‘location-based addressing’ where you retrieve the content by addressing its location, which is the IP address of the server hosting that piece of content. Some would argue that the likes of Google and Facebook has had a more profound influence on people’s lives than any political movement over the last few decades. And what ideas have enabled them? The web server starts replying with the WebStorm’s image data as fast as the Internet link between the two of you permits. When the image is being transferred between the two (server and user), two things are happening simultaneously — upload of the image from the server, and download of image to the user’s device. (You can think of upload process as a person speaking on the phone, and download process as a person on the other end taking notes). This is a pretty simple and convenient method of file sharing. But it has some drawbacks as: — Someone needs to set up a server and buy a very fast Internet connection. If the server’s Internet connection is 500 kb/s — either one client can download at 500 kb/s, or if two clients are downloading, the speed will be divided among them — and each of them will get 250 kb/s. - If one of the clients has a slow Internet— let’s say capped at 50 kb/s, the other client can download at 450 kb/s. - On the other hand, if 15 clients with fast Internet connections are downloading, none of them will get a speed of more than 33 kb/s (500/15). Suffice it to say, Jetbrains’ servers have a very fast Internet connection. It’s vulnerable and easy to block. If you don’t want your users to download Webstorm images, you just have to block Jetbrains’ sites. I can’t think of why non-programmers would want to block Webstorm’s image downloads, but in case of censored content (like Government crimes), or illegal content (like pirated movies), or both (NSA leaks), we can see why the government would want to block it. Now let’s see how torrents solve these problems: Let’s say you are a person with access to the proof of government crime (1GB of files). You tried to host it on a website, but the government blocked it. You now want to share it with the rest of the world. What you do is — ! you create a torrent of the file A is basically a very small file containing details of the files (names, file sizes, MD5 hashes etc.) that are shared using that torrent file. You can create it easily using your torrent client (uTorrent, Azureus, Transmission etc). You also have to add tracker details to the torrent file. A is a server whose job is to distribute peer lists to new peers ). torrent tracker You host this very small torrent file on some torrent sharing website. People who want to download your government crime proofs can go to the torrent website and download the torrent for it. They then tell their torrent client to download the files described in the torrent. Since there is no server (like Jetbrains’ server for Webstorm’s image) to download the torrent, from their torrent, client talks to the tracker explained as: Client — “Bro, any idea where I can get these govt. crime videos?”Tracker — “I don’t know man, try these people” (gives client a list of other people interested in downloading the file).Client — “By the way, add me to your list. Just in case anyone’s interested” (gives him his IP address)Tracker — “Cool” Your torrent client goes to each of the people in the list so obtained, and asks them if they are interested in sharing the files. Let’s say out of the 48 people in the list, 4 say they have File 1, 3 say they have File 2, and 6 say they have both the files. 9 say that they don’t have any files, but would like to download any files you have. The rest may or may not respond. So you start downloading File 1 from all of those 4 + 6 people who have it, and File 2 from all of those 3 + 6 people who have it. Since you’re downloading the file, they are uploading it on the other end of the internet connection. Now since you downloaded it and used other people’s internet (in addition to your own), it is your moral responsibility to allow other people to download it from you. Thus a torrent is a group of (100s or 1000s or more) people collaborating and giving each other pieces of the file until everyone has a copy of the entire file. It starts with the person who created the torrent simply uploading it until many people download, and then they upload it in turn and the torrent spreads. So if the file is 1GB in size, the creator has to upload at least 1GB for it to spread. Ideally, he’d upload about 3–4GB, and that would give him 3–4 more friends, who’ll help spread it further. This is why your . Downloading it — so that you can use, and uploading it so that others can also access the file. torrent client is both downloading and uploading the torrent file Important Points to note: All people engaged in the activity of sharing the torrent are called . peers The people who are uploading are called . seeders The people who are downloading are called . leechers A lot of people, however are both downloading and uploading at the same time and can be called both (downloading parts they don’t have and uploading the ones they do). If the number of seeders is more, you are likely to download the file faster. If the number of leechers is more, the download is likely to be slow. : Advantages of torrents Central servers (i.e. the website where you upload the torrent, and the tracker) don’t have to share a lot of data. Both torrent files and peer lists are very small in size, hence these servers don’t cost that much to set up and maintain. Difficult to block — since no central server is involved in the actual distribution and sharing of the files, it is difficult to block given its distributed nature. Thus you may realize why uploading (seeding) is so important to the concept of torrents. You are able to download only because someone else was uploading it for you. A torrent dies quickly if people refuse to upload. It may also happen that no one wants to download the torrent any more, and people who are willing to upload don’t find any takers, and after some time they give up and stop uploading that particular torrent. A lawsuit filed against BitTorrent owner Rainberry Inc, TRON Foundation's Justin Sun, and one of his colleagues, is based in employment law. However, the allegations it contains could pique interest in Hollywood, with claims that movies including The Lion King were involved in a "fraudulent scheme" to "make a profit from the illegal piracy of those materials." In 2018, Justin Sun’s Rainberry Inc. BitTorrent Inc. successfully acquired While the name Rainberry is rarely used in public, company brands such as BitTorrent, TRON, and TRX are more easily recognized by the public, with controversy rarely far behind. Developments related to these various brands are usually followed closely by the cryptocurrency press, mainly due to Sun’s voluminous tweets that tend to focus on crypto matters, rather than the file-sharing activities of the uTorrent owner. This was also the case yesterday when sites including began reporting on an employment law dispute that was quietly filed last October by a pair of former Rainberry Inc. employees. However, this development also has an interesting copyright angle that hasn’t been explained in detail. Coindesk Richard Hall worked as a product manager at the company while Lukasz Juraszek was employed as an engineer, at least before they were dismissed. Their 70-page lawsuit is a trip through many serious allegations, including racism, threats, the witnessing of physical violence, and a number of closely related matters. However, concerns over Rainberry’s exposure to copyright infringement issues appear to lie at the root of the legal action. “Defendant Justin Sun and his hand-picked mainland Chinese-born subordinates were engaged in illegal piracy of copyrighted materials for defendant Rainberry Inc., in order to make a profit from the illegal piracy of those materials, as well as other illegal and unscrupulous activities,” the lawsuit reads. Both Hall and Juraszek characterize themselves as “whistleblowers” who were subjected to a campaign of harassment after they raised concerns over activity at the company. The lawsuit claims that their employment at Rainberry was terminated following their “outright refusal to engage in criminal violation of state and national statutes concerning piracy of intellectual property”, including Hollywood first-run films. Hall claims he was assigned by the company to work as Senior Director of Product Management on the emerging file-sharing product known publicly as . He says he raised concerns with his superiors that depending on the architecture and implementation of caching and delivery algorithms, users of BTFS might be monetarily rewarded (via crypto tokens, such as BTT) for “unknowingly storing and distributing inappropriate content” and/or copyright-infringing material. BitTorrent File System (BTFS) These complaints, Hall suggests, resulted in him being demoted in a manner that prevented him from overseeing the BTFS product. Nevertheless, he says he sought out proposals from two law firms specializing in copyright law to provide estimates for a legal review of what Rainberry and TRON were preparing to do, specifically for BTFS and another product called BTFS Movie or BT Movie (the lawsuit uses both). However, the lawsuit claims that following discussion with Justin Sun, it was determined that no legal review would be carried out. According to Hall, he advised that the ‘Movie’ product should be renamed, so that outsiders wouldn’t be given the impression that the company was encouraging the illegal sharing of movies on the BTFS network. Shortly after, his employment was terminated on the basis that he was “not a fit” for the company, Hall claims. “[I]t become clear that Richard Hall was terminated because he raised legitimate legal concerns about the actual or potential for BTFS and associated BTFS Movie projects to be engaged in illegal activity and pirating of copyrighted materials that Justin Sun did not want to have investigated because it would delay the launch and reveal the illegal and nefarious activities in which the company was engaged,” the lawsuit reads. In July 2019, Lukasz Juraszek reports that he realized that BTFS was no longer a “demo app”. As a result he began to step up his concerns over the application because the company had no control over the content being posted on BTFS “which at the time was entirely hosted on TRON’s infrastructure.” According to him, the Movie app was then “handed off” to Rainberry’s “Mainland China” office for implementation “by end of July 2019.” In August 2019, Juraszek says he again raised concerns that illegal content could be downloaded from BTFS, that he was uncomfortable working on the project, and that attorneys should be consulted before further work was done on BT Movie. He later carried out his own investigations by accessing the TRON “BT Movie” website to check if illegal content could be found. According to him, he found a Chinese-subtitled version of The Lion King (which was still in cinemas) along with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Hobbs & Shaw, Avengers: Infinity Wars”, and “many, many others.” On August 20, 2019, following what appears to be several strained interactions with management on a variety of topics, Juraszek was reportedly dismissed for “sharing company information” with a third-party. In the early 2010s, everybody was talking about Big Data, Hadoop clusters, data lakes… the hope being that we could get tremendous insights by collecting and processing massive amounts of data. Even then, however, there was a fundamental problem. We could store and process vast quantities of digital data, no sweat, but actual-world data – the sort that actually did represent what was happening outside our computer screens – was still in short supply. And even when we could get it, how could we trust it? Even back in the pre-AI era, not knowing where your data came from was already a real hassle. Now, with AI systems making increasingly important decisions, that headache is now a migraine. That is where Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks – DePINs – come in. DePINs essentially use blockchain to incentivize individuals to build and upkeep physical-world infrastructure. Not large corporations. Regular, normal people. It's like BitTorrent, but instead of sharing files, people are sharing information from the physical world – and getting paid for it. But with BitTorrent, where you're just praying that the file you download actually is what it says it is, DePINs provide a proof of where the data is coming from and that it hasn't been tampered with. Reliable Data for AI The machine-learning universe is booming, and it's all fueled by data. Large datasets are used to train these beautifully complex AI models, specifically the big ones – Large Language Models (LLMs) and the like. Digital data? We've got buckets of that. But high-quality, real-world data? That's a different story. It's in short supply. It's expensive. And, more often than not, you have no idea where it came from or if you can even trust it. And that's a huge problem. Because if the data itself is skewed, or manipulated, or just plain wrong, then the AI built upon it will be too. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say. How do we ensure the data used to power these systems is reliable & trustworthy? This is where Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks, or DePINs, start to sound very interesting. These networks by design, interact with the world around us – sensor networks, hardware. DePINs have the advantage of capturing valuable real-world information that is typically difficult to reliably obtain. DePINs are different from BitTorrent networks where you rely on hope that your file is intact and trust strangers because it has a verification and reward system inside. Let me illustrate this with a few examples. Smart Agriculture – Farming with Data, Not Just Intuition For many centuries now, farmers have depended on experience, intuition as well as luck. But what if there was a way in which we could offer them some additional data-driven help? This is DePIN-driven farming. A multitude of little sensors strewn all over. They monitor the moisture in the soil, check the temperature; do some work even before any person can know it properly. And all that goes through the DePIN safely, and can be traced. It's possible due to blockchain technology. Every measure receives a unique digital fingerprint – the so-called "cryptographic hash." This is one-way code – simple enough to create a fingerprint out of data but impossible to reverse operation. The fingerprint and time stamp are recorded on the permanent ledger – forever available for scrutiny and analysis. Change some records? You'll see it immediately. And it's completely different from downloading any files off various random torrent trackers and then making those customary prayers above BitTorrent. Then, machine learning algorithms sort through this information, calculating just what each part of the field needs. Just-the-right-amounts-of-fertilizer. Only water when and where the soil is parched. It's like every plant has its own nutritionist who waters them and connects with their crops, which they weren't earlier. And what about privacy? Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs). These enable the DePIN to prove something about the data without revealing the data itself. Most probably, one would expect a farmer to prove that their harvests are organic. It doesn't need handing over the complete details from their sensors like – with ZKPs they can easily do so, but say "Yes I did follow all rules" without giving out everything in exchange for nothing. It's not just a matter of sharing information; it's a matter of sharing quality, good information, and getting paid for it. Let's take another example and talk about transportation. Bridges That Talk We cross bridges and railways daily. Most of us, without second thoughts. Until something goes wrong. Costly inspections. Occasional checks. Signs of disaster looming? Often ignored. DePINs to the rescue. Sensors embedded in the structures. A living network. Strain gauges, accelerometers, acoustic sensors – whispering secrets of stress and strain. Secure data flowing. Verifiably. AI software, designed from engineering data, analyzes the flow. Patterns. Anomalies. A warning long before disaster strikes. Preemptive maintenance. with fewer disruptions to it. Benefits to the individuals who install and maintain the sensors include Safer infrastructure, Lower costs, and, ultimately, Peace of mind. And, most significantly, unlike a file you might have downloaded from some unknown website, you know that this data is coming from a specific sensor, in a specific location, at a specific time – and that it hasn't been altered. Let's talk about Cricket, y'know, the one that is played in the Indian Subcontinent and enjoyed by Billions of individuals – The Game Adheres to the Real World Think about a game of Cricket. Strategy, technique, and. the weather. The pitch. The ball. Traditionally, video games control these as fixed. But what if the game reacts to the real world in the same manner in which it reacts today? Imagine a DePIN-powered cricket video game. Environment-based DePINs, such as weather stations, provide the game with real-time data. Suddenly a Mumbai shower? The virtual pitch gets a slippery dressing, favoring swing bowlers. The AI changes its approach. And it goes further still. A dedicated DePIN might track the real aging of cricket balls during pro games. Sensors, image processing – tracking how the seam deteriorates, the shine runs off, and the shape changes. This data is fed into the game; the virtual ball behaves exactly like the real ball. Old ball? More spin, more errant bounce. Humidity, dew point – all consumed by a local environmental DePIN – can have an impact on the game. The AI makes adjustments. iI's a question of realistic play based upon verifiable, real-world information. These are just a few. Breed all these streams of data – agriculture, infrastructure, sports, and hundreds of others – together into an adaptable, real-time virtual model of the world re-running simulations which AI could tap to understand, predict, and interact with our world. DePINs, with their measurable real-world inputs, are the key. From adaptive video games (like our example of Cricket) to adaptive entertainment, think of a Sherlock Holmes series on Netflix subtly adapting according to proven real-world trends. In fact, This is no fantasy. Already, there are projects that have started with a bang like Ocean Protocol, Hivemapper & Filecoin Saturn. Conclusion We started with a problem: trust. How do we trust the data that drives our increasingly AI-dependent world? The trick, it seems, is to marry the real and unreal world in ways that were never before possible. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks – DePINs – are making that possible. Imagine a world in which a Sherlock Holmes Netflix series isn't merely something you watch but something that quietly responds to your environment. The secrets change, the clues change, and even the weather outside changes in the way that is happening outside your window – all thanks to verifiable, real-time data from a DePIN. It's not just games; it's about how we interact with technology. It's about building AI that isn't just smart but grounded. And it can happen now.
