After more than ten years on Elance / oDesk / Upwork, I dare to say that I’ve seen and experienced it first-hand: all the good, the bad, and the ugly. I wrote about my fellow freelancers who have suffered blow by blow; the most notorious ones, the introduction of and . I could live with the fact that my words had fallen on deaf remote-work-community ears. Look, the clients get suspended, as well. But, there’s a huge difference. Upwork What I’d witnessed was in every freelancer’s best interest. I’m talking about fraudsters and “predators” which are a common problem not only on Upwork but on every freelance platform. What’s right is right in this case, and Upwork is fighting the right fight to make sure its platform is as safe and secure as possible by suspending these kinds of clients. However, what a fellow freelancer brought to my attention was something completely different and unheard of. Upwork “Whales” Are Supposed To Be A Protected Species, Are They Not? The so-called Upwork “whales” are every freelancer’s dream. I’m talking about six-figure spenders on Upwork. There are even seven-and-eight-figure whales, but they’re reserved for crème de la crème of the Upwork freelance elite. So, back to my freelance friend who has been swimming with the six-figure whales on Upwork successfully for quite some time. One day, he shared a screenshot with me that got him upset. He couldn’t submit a proposal and, thus, wasn’t able to work, because this client got suspended. At first, I didn’t understand what was all the fuss about. My friend told me that was unthinkable for more than one reason. First, nobody kills the goose that lays the golden eggs in their right business mind. Second, after spending so much money on Upwork and hundreds of projects under your client’s belt you know all the ins and outs of Upwork Terms, especially the no-no things that can get you in suspension trouble (temporary or permanent). Finally, not just Upwork, but every platform would think twice about suspending a long-term client with deep pockets. You can suspend a hundred freelancers without blinking an eye because there are thousands of newbies eager to take their place. But, killing a whale on Upwork can have serious business consequences. I did my best to sympathize with my brother in freelance arms, but my one swallow doesn't make a summer comforting line was hard to swallow for him. After two more pieces of evidence, I finally accepted that this wasn’t a coincidence. Eight “whales” times six-figure amounts they have spent, well, that’s a lot of money to “write off” just like that, even for Upwork. OK. I mean, it’s not OK. What’s going on, and why? New Clients on the Upwork Block Even if you aren’t as successful and diligent as my friend who cares deeply about “whales,” but you happen to be an enthusiastic freelancer on Upwork then you probably haven’t missed their CEO’s LinkedIn post about the impressive financial report for the previous year: This post goes on and on, but there’s one part that caught my eye: What’s 8 suspended against 31 new clients? Nothing. Right? I guess that “enterprise clients” stand for potential “whales.” Yet, it’s going to take some time to hit six or seven-figure spending targets for these new Upwork clients. Just like all freelancers are equal, but some freelancers are more equal than others ( ), all Upwork clients are equal, but some clients are more equal than others (“Client Spend” category filter ). JSS - Job Success Score for those who have an Upwork profile I forgot to mention one tiny detail. My friend and I were able to find eight six-figure suspended clients on Upwork in three weeks. So, the legit question remains: how many more clients have been suspended in the meantime (by the time you’re reading this story)? Honestly, Upwork's financial reports and suspended clients, no matter how much they spend, don’t affect my average resting heart rate, but the number of freelancers who are used to and supposed to work for these gone-with-the-wind clients certainly do. Based on my first-hand experience each of these whales has dozens of open active jobs at any given moment for a good price on average. So, eight suspended whales means hundreds of Upwork freelancers with no work. Where Have All The Good Upwork Clients Gone? All those clients haven’t left the remote work world just because Upwork suspended them. Some of them may even return because we can’t know for sure if these were temporary or permanent suspensions. Yet, some are gone for good. Where they’re going to hire and work next? That’s the million-dollar question, literally. I can’t believe that in October it’s going to be five years since I asked the question that’s still waiting to age well: Is Freelance Anarchy The Future of Freelancing? Let that story sink in, read it because it’s not what you think. Contrary to the unpopular belief and prejudice of Upwork Community moderators, I don’t want or cheer for Upwork to collapse on the stock market. I just want , to the good old days with no connects and (questionable) suspensions. Upwork to get back to its basics If there’s someone who can make freelancing great again it’s not this guy… …but Upwork itself. The day when I won’t have the “material” to write about Upwork, it’s going to be a good day for both clients and freelancers. Until that day, you still have to pay to play on Upwork, this way or another. FREE-lancing; that’s how the whole remote work thing started. Remember?

One of the very likely reasons could be the fact that people who haven’t spent five minutes working as freelancers are giving “life-changing” tips for freelancers in their articles. Also, there are so many copy/paste articles that are just rewritten more or less successfully. So, you end up with the same old tips presented in a new way. Every freelance platform has the right to suspend your account temporarily or permanently. There's no difference between Upwork or any other platform online, big or small. When it comes to their sacred right to say you bye no cry, they're all the same. However, it turns out that the reasons for such unpopular decisions make a huge difference for freelancers. It's not a matter of life or death if you're going to get suspended, but it can hurt and cost you a lot. We are contacting you to let you know we have suspended your access to Upwork indefinitely. Our decision is based on a careful review and the fact that you have submitted a high number of proposals for jobs on our site without many contracts or earnings. Unfortunately, this means the jobs posted by clients are not a good match for your skills. I know this news is likely disappointing to you. But our goal at Upwork is to enable freelancers to successfully connect and collaborate with clients who need their skills and expertise. The way I was able to read it between the heartless Upwork’s lines just couldn’t be softened. You are too stupid to work on Upwork! We don’t need you! Long story short, why don’t you just buzz off? You Aren’t The Only One You know what? I consider myself to be a reasonable freelancer. It hasn’t even crossed my mind to drop a dozen F-bombs in my email to show Upwork what I really think and feel about them. That’s not my style. So, I decided it would be a good idea to gain comfort in sharing my story with my freelance brothers and sisters online. Guess what? I wasn’t the only one. It turned out there have been literally hundreds of freelancers being purged from Upwork, almost on a daily basis. Now, when you spend so much time as I did on countless forums, you can read and hear all kinds of horror stories and conspiracy theories. But, let’s work it out. What would you like to drink?” Upwork: One Dollar OR One Billion Dollars - It Doesn’t Make A (Legal) Difference Well, you see, it’s not that simple. If Upwork hadn’t had the problem of users wanting to leave the platform, they wouldn’t have imposed the infamous Section 7, in the first place. Obviously, things escalated so much to such a degree that additional “measures” had to be implemented. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Upwork is trying to keep “the best of the best” by any means necessary even if it means using the “soft legal force,” such as the Conversion Fee. Upwork lawyers must have been very expensive. My legal opinion you didn’t ask for: that’s the money well spent for Upwork. There’s only one “one dollar” problem, though. This one-dollar fee can cost Upwork millions of dollars in lost service fees. What do you think how will the users react to this latest Upwork’s legal catch-22? The users choose their words carefully in Upwork Community for obvious reasons. That’s why I prefer Reddit where people speak their minds freely with no fear. If you’re asking me, “vox populi” at its finest. You Had One Problem, Upwork - Now, You Have Two Upwork could’ve left things just the way they were before, and nobody would’ve noticed it, let alone discussed it for days. People come and go. It’s always been like this in the freelance industry. Upwork is no exception. Upwork should’ve kept its ToS mouth shut unless the problem of users leaving after two years was so big that it turned into an “exodus.” Upwork has succeeded in one thing. It raised the “awareness” of its problematic non-circumvention clauses and opt-out fees in the worst possible way: Users are discussing legal matters instead of new projects and features in the Community. Instead of offering a juicy loyalty carrot, Upwork is threatening with an even longer legal stick. Those who have second thoughts about leaving, now can’t stop thinking and talking about it. Those who’ve already been on their way out just got an additional reason not to look back. Those who had no clue about the possibility to leave got an interesting idea to think about. Congrats, Upwork! You just paid one dollar for the most expensive boomerang in business history. If and when it hits you back, it’s going to cost you millions. Congrats to you too! You can collect them all in a series of books — how to write a winning proposal, what to include or not, including the best templates, etc. Everything you’ve always wanted to know about and use in your perfect Upwork project proposal is waiting for you out there in the cyber freelance space. Then, how come the overwhelming majority of freelancers fail to do it right? One of the very likely reasons could be the fact that people who haven’t spent five minutes working as freelancers are giving “life-changing” tips for freelancers in their articles. Also, there are so many copy/paste articles that are just rewritten more or less successfully. So, you end up with the same old tips presented in a new way. A genuine article about Upwork freelance project proposals with first-hand real-freelance-life experiences and recommendations is hard to find. My portfolio has more than a thousand projects, which means that I’ve submitted tens of thousands of proposals during my professional freelance career. I’m not saying that I’ve seen, done, and I know it all. The best thing you could possibly do is to avoid making the same mistakes I did when I used to write and submit my project proposals. Don’t Expect That A Project Proposal Will Do All The Work For You Your project proposal is merely an invitation. Nothing more than the first step on your journey of winning a job. Many freelancers expect that a proposal will bring them new work and clients all by itself. There’s no proposal in the world, no matter how good it may be, that’s going to knock your potential clients off their feet. Your proposal is supposed to create an opportunity to present yourself and your work, not to win you a project. That’s the only right approach. Don’t fool yourself that your project proposal is going to be perfect and irresistible to your clients. Your project is the first page of your freelance struggle to win a project, not the last one. So, treat it as such. The Quickest Way To A Freelancer’s Regret Is A Boilerplate Every single project proposal you write and send out there should be unique and a story for itself. It is understandable that the bidding process is the most time-consuming and annoying activity for every freelancer. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it. Either you write a unique and fully personalized project proposal or don’t write it all. I used to think that it was a smart thing to have a couple of pre-made proposals for a handful of the most typical project types. A small army of copy/paste proposals, even with some modifications and adjustments, is simply doomed to fail. That’s the perfect waste of your time. It’s better to write one totally genuine and personalized freelance project proposal than a dozen more or less identical proposals. Make It Personal With Your Project Proposal From The Moment One First things first, always look up for the names in a project’s description. There’s no better way to begin your proposal than by directly addressing a person who has posted this project. You are allowed to do a bit of research if a client hasn’t left his name at the end of the description. You can Google the company or website if available. This is the most crucial moment when a client gets a confirmation that your cover letter isn’t a spam. If this isn’t the case and you can’t find a single piece of personal information about your potential client, then present yourself the right way. Very often the clients leave a “secret” keyword somewhere in the project description. They want to make sure you read the whole description more than once. That’s why they want you to use this keyword in your proposal. These clients mean business, so don’t miss this opportunity to convince them you’re the right freelancer for their project. It Is Never Too Early To Start A Discussion About Your Price and A Project’s Time Frame This approach is a bit of a gamble. Some clients appreciate a direct straight-to-point project proposal. You explain what you are going to do and how. Then, you include your price and a required time estimate. The good thing is that you will show initiative and save a great deal of time for both yourself and your client. Only two reviews stuck in every freelancer’s mind. The first five-star review. And, the first negative review. I used to work on all freelance platforms you can possibly imagine. I’ve earned more than a thousand reviews. Do you think that all of them are five-star reviews? I still haven’t forgotten how it hurts to get your very first negative review. That’s why, I’m sharing a handful of tips that can help my fellow freelancers overcome this problem and get back on track. The First Tip — Let It Snow! What’s this supposed to mean? Here’s an interesting thing about clients. They appreciate all of your positive reviews, but they usually take them for granted. They pay particular attention to your negative reviews. You have hundreds of shiny five-star reviews, but that one negative review is always the eye-catcher. What can you do about it? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! So, let it snow! Let the new positive review fall down like snow. Your negative review will eventually get buried under the new five-star reviews. What went wrong and why? At one point, you will have so many reviews that your potential clients will have to scroll for minutes before they stumble upon your negative review. So, let it snow with new reviews! The Second Tip — Your First Negative Review Shouldn’t Be Your Last! When I got my first five-star review, I felt like I was the king of the world. Then, I got my first negative review and I was thinking about closing my account. I was so devastated that I wanted to start all over again and create a new account. I even wanted to change my current freelance website I used to work on. I even wanted to give up on freelancing for good. Why? My perfect score was ruined. That’s why. I thought that a fresh new start was the best way to deal with my painful disappointment. Little did I know that wasn’t the only time I was to feel this way. What happened? I realized and accepted that every new negative review I got after the first one hurt less. Eventually, I stopped paying attention. So, should you too. The Third Tip — It’s OK To Cry, But It’s Not OK To Beg! Very often, the first negative freelance reviews are unjust. So, freelancers write letters to support teams urging them to remove these damaging reviews. What’s even worse, on some freelance platforms, there’s a possibility to ask your client to withdraw his negative review. I witnessed first-hand more than once how some clients tried to take advantage of these situations and get some free work in return for their “kindness.” This may be a bit hard for you to accept, but sometimes can be a good thing to have negative reviews. It’s simply impossible to please all clients. We live in the real freelance world. Imagine a freelance profile without a single negative review. Isn’t it just too good to be true? The Fourth Tip — A Negative Review That Doesn’t Kill You Makes You A Better Freelancer! Now, this is going to sound awkward, at least to say. Some of my fellow freelancers will raise their eyebrows, but for your freelance health, it’s actually a good thing to get a negative review. That’s the moment you become mature as a freelancer. Oh, I know. It sounds terrible, doesn’t it? The freelance “baptism” by the fire of negative reviews. You have to strengthen your freelance immune system. Unfortunately, there’s no better way to do it than to go through the hell of your first negative review. The Final Tip — Much Ado About Nothing! One day, your first negative review will be a laughing matter to you. One day, you will look back and say, One day, but not today. So, you have to take my word for it. You will even reach a point when you will joke about it. You will share your most terrible experience with your freelance friends and you will laugh. I was so silly. I was so foolish. Believe me, when I say, it hurts less to get than to leave a negative review. I’m a helpless believer in Good Karma. More than once, I had to hire freelancers myself. From Getting Over a 1-star Upwork Review to Becoming a 5-star Freelancer

Does anyone still remember MySpace? Well, the story about MySpace should be told over and over again. Why? Because you can learn a lot from it. To begin with, they made a movie about called “Social Network,” if I’m not mistaken. Now, if you’re asking me, they should’ve made a movie about the rise and fall of MySpace. That would’ve been one more interesting and far way more dramatic movie. The sweet irony is that Justin Timberlake, who had one of the lead roles in this movie, now owns MySpace. Who could have thought that would be possible? Maybe he got an idea to buy MySpace while participating in a movie about Facebook. I don’t know for sure. What I do know is that MySpace deserves a special place. Here’s why. Facebook Oh Boy, Those Were the Days Back in the day, from 2005 to 2008 MySpace was THE most popular, visited, and used social network in the world. “By 2006, MySpace was being visited more times than Google Search and Yahoo! Mail, becoming the most visited website in the United States. In June of 2006, it was reported that MySpace was responsible for nearly 80 percent of all traffic-related to social networking sites.” That’s something not only Facebook, but any other social network out there can only dream about. Who could have thought that it would be possible to lose $600M in six years? That’s precisely what happened to MySpace. “News Corp bought the site for $580 million in 2005. The company eventually sold MySpace to Specific Media for $35 million in 2011.” So, What Went Wrong and Why? Any online platform with millions of users is a gigantic money-eating machine, plain and simple. Here’s what good old Wiki has to say about that: “Marvin L. Gittelman suggested that the $900 million three-year advertisement deal with Google while being a short-term cash windfall, was a handicap in the long run. That deal required Myspace to place even more ads on its already heavily advertised space, which made the site slow, more difficult to use, and less flexible. Myspace could not experiment with its own site without forfeiting revenue, while rival Facebook was rolling out a new clean site design.” Truth be told, things are a bit more complicated in MySpace’s case. You know what they say. All great empires fall from within, including the digital ones. The virus of decadence is alive and kicking. He obviously didn’t die out with the fall of the Roman Empire. While MySpace was occupied with Facebook was working hard with the modest underdog budget. The rest is the shiny Facebook’s history and the new social networks world order. “the opening of extravagant new offices around the world, ” “According to Businessweek, the pressure to drive revenue, when other startups were using the luxury of venture money to create and explore, stifled the possibility that MySpace would have the breathing room it needed to innovate. Instead, executives were focused on trying to raise advertising profits.” What Does It Mean When Someone Says That You Are the Next MySpace? When someone says that your startup, company, business, platform, or whatever is the next MySpace, you have to immediately stop what you’re doing and take a deep breath. It’s not a curse, but it’s a serious warning. This means that you’re already on the road to Mandalay, but you just don’t know it yet. So, here I am and I am asking this question, Now, Upwork may reply, my dear Upwork are you the next MySpace? what are you talking about? We’re having the time of our freelance lives. The trouble with Upwork, though, is that it just had its “MySpace Google advertising” moment when it made its NASDAQ debut. Meaning, that Upwork took the money, and now it has to live up to its investors’ expectations the same way MySpace had to satisfy Google’s advertising appetites. We know how that one turned out for MySpace. The pressure is going to be enormous and Upwork will have to be very creative in finding new ways to ensure liquidity. Here’s the problem. Upwork already doubled its fees. That wasn’t enough. So, it had to go public. I’m afraid that’s not going to be enough too. Why? Feel free to check Upwork’s NASDAQ situation. While you’re reading this article, its shares are hitting a record low. Punk Is Not Dead, Neither Is MySpace MySpace is still alive, but it isn’t kicking, that’s for sure. The numbers never lie. “Last November, the site got 50 million unique visitors in the U.S. That’s a lot of visitors for a site that most people haven’t thought about in 8 years. Facebook currently boasts 864 million daily active users worldwide.” How do MySpacers feel about it? Well, here’s what they had to say to Business Insider: “MySpace: Yes, Facebook Kills Our Traffic, But At Least We Make Money!” Now, that’s a definition of a positive attitude. “Upwork doesn’t suck for writers, you suck as a writer!” If this was the first thought to cross your mind after seeing this article’s title, that’s OK. You just saved five minutes of your life to do something else. That’s totally fine with me. I’m not one of those people who say, However, in this case, I’m pretty much sure that I’m not the only one who feels this way. I will give you a handful of reasons why I think Upwork isn’t a writer-friendly place. if it’s not working for me then it must be broken. Reason #1 — Have to bleed to bid. As a freelance writer, you’re doomed to be a “one-timer.” Unless you find a client who needs new blog posts on a regular basis, you jump from one project to another. One-time gigs. That’s what freelance writing is mostly all about. You finish writing content for a new website. You won’t see that client again until the time comes to redesign his website. As such, I need to “consume” a few bids each day. So, what am I supposed to do with the 60 bids or connects per month? That’s enough to place one bid a day on Upwork. You usually need two bids for one proposal. I have to be insanely lucky or super creative or a perfect match or all of these to nail a project with almost every single proposal I submit. I even used to pay for Upwork’s membership plan. What’s it called? For ten bucks you get ten additional bids. Really? What’s the point? If you want to bid more, you have to pay more. One dollar for each new bid. That’s two dollars for each new proposal. At the end of your freelance writing month on Upwork, you have hundreds of dollars to pay just to bid. The best thing about it. If you bid too many times with no success, you can get banned for good. That’s just lovely, but I have to move on to the next reason. Reason #2 — Killing me softly with your initial freelance fee. If you don’t want to pay a 20% fee on Upwork indefinitely, then you have to catch a “whale.” I’m talking about clients who’re paying $10K+ per project, freelancer, or year. In freelance writing waters, you don’t see the whales too often. I remember a freelance “colleague” who slammed me in the Upwork community with his replies to my comments. His “whales” were worth $50K or even $100K per year. When you read something like that, you feel like you’re working for peanuts. Or, maybe he wasn’t entirely honest about his “achievements.” One thing was obvious, though, he wasn’t a writer. So, that’s about it. I pay a 20% fee or 10% in the best-case scenario when I earn more than $500. I really don’t know how many writers pay a 5% fee on Upwork, but I’m definitely not one of them. Reason #3 — It ain’t fair that quality writing projects are so rare. Upwork has mastered the art of self-promotion. The most densely populated platform with superlatives in the world, if you’re asking me. And then, you stumble upon a series of project descriptions where you are expected to write the works of art for five or ten bucks. It would be acceptable for me if one in ten writing projects available on Upwork can be labeled as a “decent” one. The trouble is that you can say that for just one in twenty or fifty projects. I’m a professional freelancer. Whatever that’s supposed to mean for you. I have no plan B. I’m in dire straits by default, but I have my limits. I’m not that desperate. I would rather work on a construction site than write an article or page for five bucks. Where are all those top-quality writing projects on Upwork? Either I don’t see them or the best writing seats are already taken. Reason #4 — Who cares if you’re creative if you aren’t a native? This reason doesn’t necessarily apply to all writers working on Upwork. I have no problem when a client insists on hiring a native writer. That’s his or her prerogative. What I do mind a lot, though, is a client who lectures me about writing that’s reserved for native speakers, but he can’t tell a difference between “its” and “it’s.” That’s something I call the power-of-the-flag syndrome. If you can change a flag associated with your account, you can change your client’s perception of your writing skills before you even start working on his project. One of my freelance friends moved to Australia. Guess what? He became a native writer. What happened to don’t judging a book by its cover and a freelance writer by his account’s flag? Reason #5 — The last thing Upwork need is a new writer on board. Ah, the famously infamous “Dear John” letter Upwork sends to all new freelancers who’re trying to go through the registration process: “ Unfortunately, at this time there are already many freelancers with a similar skill set to yours and we cannot accept your registration.” I did a small experiment on Upwork. My cousin applied as a new freelance writer. Of course, he was rejected immediately. Then, he applied again, but this time as a developer. Guess what happened? This time he got accepted. The trouble was, that you can’t register as a developer and then work as a writer. So, he closed his Upwork account before even placing the first bid. There’s a chance that something has changed in the meantime. However, I’m pretty much sure that Upwork has even more writers than it needs. The most troubling part is that the clients should decide who to hire or not. This way Upwork decides. What happened to the free, open, and unbiased freelance market with equal opportunities for everyone? And the Moral of My Story Is? What fair’s fair, Upwork doesn’t suck for all writers. I used to work on Upwork. My point is that this platform fails in one particular category for the unacceptably high percentage of freelance writers. I always like to say, The same applies to the writing, as well. It has been a while since I got my university degree, but I clearly remember something called laissez-faire economics. That’s something capitalism is all about. Or, in plain English, let me do my job. When the “government” (Upwork) interferes too much and messes up with your business, then we have a problem. freelancing is for everyone, but not everybody can be a freelancer. Upwork systematically and intentionally makes life difficult for the overwhelming majority of freelance writers. That’s the only point I wanted to make. 5 Reasons Why Upwork Sucks for Writers

The stock markets and Bitcoin keep crashing! Why? Don’t know; I’m not a wolf of Wall Street. The stock value of the so-called freelance industry “triumvirate” (Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer) has been massacred in the last six months. More than 60% on average in less than six months. Why? I have some pretty scary screenshots to share. Brace yourselves, my fellow freelancers, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride. First, let’s have a look at how the freelance Aussies are doing. Their stocks are now 50% below their November 2021 value. If you think that’s bad, you should hold your freelance horses to wait and see what happened to Upwork and Fiverr stocks. But, for now, let’s stick to Freelancer dot com. All things considered, with almost 60M registered users, which you can check yourself in real-time at the very bottom of their official site, I believe that no more than 500 employees according to Wiki are doing their best. I can only imagine what kind of a logistical nightmare this must have been for their support team, not to mention countless remote work interactions and financial transactions on a daily basis. Moving on to Upwork. More than 64% down in past six months. Oh boy, that hurts a lot. I’m going to address the elephant, or it’s more appropriate the bear, in the Ukraine room, right away. Upwork’s decision to suspend its business in Russia and Belarus has nothing to do with the performance of their stocks. The reason is simple and obvious. Here’s a direct quote from the official Upwork statement: Over the coming days, customers in Russia and Belarus will no longer be able to sign up for new accounts, initiate new contracts, or be visible in search. Existing contracts with talent and clients in the region will remain open, with final billing due by May 1, 2022. Upwork announced that they’re strutting down business in Russia and Belarus at the beginning of March, with the “operational extension” until May 1. Looking back at Upwork stocks, they were already in serious trouble since January, so we can’t blame Putin for this one. With all due respect, these markets are important contributors to Upwork’s total revenue, but not decisive ones. Approximately 10% of Upwork's total revenue in 2021 was derived from work where either the talent or the client was located in the region, with Ukraine representing approximately 6% and Russia and Belarus representing approximately 4% combined. Rich Smith who analyzed Upwork’s financial situation in March for “The Motley Fool” simply stated the obvious, and I dare to add, and convenient set of circumstances: In light of this, Upwork announced it is "withdrawing its previously issued first-quarter and full-year 2022 guidance." Given that the company already wasn't expected to earn any profit, the news now is probably going to be even worse. The more you wait, the worst it gets for Upwork. However, the biggest shocker was undoubtedly Fiverr with a jaw-dropping 81% fall from the stock market grace: What in the world happened here?! Fiverr stocks used to be the best in the industry compared to Upwork and Freelancer. Back to “The Motley Fool” for the only explanation that made some sense to me: It would be an understatement to say that . With inflation at a 40-year high and the Federal Reserve on track to hike the benchmark federal funds interest rate as many as five more times this year -- on top of its recent 50-basis point hike earlier this month -- investors in growth stocks are particularly skittish when it comes to any signs that a company's growth is slowing down. They found reasons to believe just that about Fiverr based on its new revenue guidance. Amid the Great Resignation, millions of workers have fled their jobs in search of flexibility and agency. Upwork, an online marketplace that connects clients with freelancers for a fee, is helping such workers discover new opportunities, as well as giving employers a way to find talent. The company recently launched new features for users on both sides of the hiring table, including Project Catalog (which lists prepackaged opportunities with defined scopes and rates) and Talent Scout (which curates the cream of the applicant crop for hiring managers and HR). Upwork now boasts nearly 800,000 clients, a 22% year-over-year increase. If TIME had used “pandemic” instead of the “Great Resignation,” this “WHY” paragraph would have made more sense. But, it’s OK. I can live with that. And, just like Ricky Gervais, I should’ve left it. No. I did not. Instead of high-fiving Upwork, I’m going to give you five reasons why this naming is controversial. Reason #1 - Increasing Payment Processing Fees for Clients Upwork announced on its website that the company is offering a new plan that consolidates Upwork Basic and Upwork Plus. Now called Client Marketplace Plan, instead of paying a subscription fee plus a processing fee, Upwork will charge clients 5% per transaction (3% if using a checking account). Upwork’s ACH charges used to have a 0% fee, but they will now have a 3% fee. Credit card charges used to carry a 3% fee, and will now be 5%. Yes, I’d like to learn more because I don’t get it. Yes, I’d like to see if I’m eligible because I want to pay less. So, the biggest and the most successful remote work platform is increasing its payment processing fees for clients in the middle of the Great Resignation when “millions of workers have fled their jobs in search of flexibility.” What’s the business logic behind such a decision with “a 22% year-over-year increase” of new clients?
