Notifications are more than just alerts; they keep you informed, engaged, and connected. Whether it's a new comment on your story, a recommended read, or an exciting platform update, a well-designed notification system enhances your experience by bringing relevant information directly to you.

With that in mind, we've taken things a step further. Our revamped notification board doesn’t just keep you updated—it helps you discover the most relevant tech stories and community interactions, tailored just for you.

Click the notification bell or visit app.hackernoon.com/notifications to browse:

  • All Notifications – View all notifications, both personalized and general.
  • For You – See recommended stories based on your reading history, our Editing Protocol, and a lite AI layer. In the future, we plan to recommend even more relevant content, including users and companies to follow!
  • Engagement – Track community interactions, such as replies to your comments and reactions to your stories. We've also added action-based activities, allowing users to take direct actions from their notifications!
  • Announcements – Stay updated on contests, profile suggestions, and new features.

Did you know?

You don’t need to hoard notifications! You can delete the ones that no longer serve you by clicking the three-dot icon next to them and hitting 'Delete Notification'.

The Building Process: Our Dev’s Perspective

We designed a notification system that delivers alerts based on user actions. A key improvement in this update is engagement tracking. Previously, we didn’t track who performed an action—just that an action happened. Now, for example, if someone subscribes to a writer’s newsletter, the writer can see exactly who subscribed. This also enables a 'Mutual Subscribe' option, fostering better connections between users.

The 'For You' tab now recommends stories tailored to your interests. We achieved this by mapping user reading patterns and applying a lightweight AI layer. This allows us to efficiently recommend the same article to many users while maintaining relevance. In future updates, we aim to expand these recommendations beyond articles, including users, companies, and more.

With these updates, we hope to make your HackerNoon experience more personalized and engaging. Let us know what you think!
